I’ll be dropping stages of things I’m currently working or have just worked on in here, when it’s permissable for me to do so. There are some stage images for the image shown small below in the gallery to the left.

Plus some glimpses of stuff I’m currently working on, before it progresses to a level where I’m not allowed to show anything of it. Early work on two of four projects aimed at children as usual.

I sketch the main character on a layer over a blocked in base - and add some shadow layers over, set to multiply,

Texture is introduced early on by painting through stencils created from photos.

You can just about see the results here.

Having strengthened the over all colour, I introduce another layer of solid colour beneath the drawing, blocking in some base colours for the character.

Stencils can also be used to introduce gradients where needed - like here on the sky lyer.

And here on the floor where I want a pool of light.

Inversing it enables me to blend more seamlessly with a new colour addition.

It pays to turn of the shadow layers sometimes to get a clearer crack at buliding up form in the character base layer - helps by making colour selection easier too (alt and slelect from the image on a pc)

You should hve noticed that a mermaid has entered the mix, using similar set up - drawing over solid colour. beneath the shadow layers.

I work on trying to get the spatial relationship and attitudes right to give some tension.

Building tonal depth in the characters dissipates makes the textural effects seem weaker - so I work into the some more.

And toy with the idea of an small army of crabs surrounding the boy.

I've been using the chalk toolon rough paper for most solid colour. but I don't want it so much in the sky - I use ctrl+B to open the blur option and soften it a bit.

This is the colour palette I've been usiong mostly. I add some stripes to his trousers for more interest.

I add a more positive texture to the ground, and then decide I don#'t want the crabs in there after all.
